TEHRAN – The Iranian parliament has revised a bill outlining the specifics of a bilateral air services agreement with Iraq, as it faces fresh sanctions against its major airlines from Western states.
On Tuesday, members of the Iranian parliament reached a consensus to address the concerns raised by the Iranian Guardian Council regarding the initial proposal for air services collaboration with Iraq.
The revised bill is now set to be presented to the Guardian Council for final endorsement. The plan aims to reduce airport costs and increase flights between the two countries, as well as the activity of Iraqi airlines inside Iran. It also includes enhanced security cooperation to ensure the safety of air operations in both Iraqi and Iranian airspace.
Analysts assert that this measure could be a viable response to the air embargo imposed on Iran Air by the European Troika and the United States.
Last week, Britain, Germany, France, and the United States imposed sanctions on Iran Air, citing a disputed allegation that Tehran has supplied medium-range ballistic missiles to Russia.
